Dr Jeffrey Tobias
Director, Internet Business Solutions Group
Cisco Systems Inc.
Dr Tobias is a member of Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group, a high-level group of consultants focussing on working strategically with key clients and customers around the globe. Dr Tobias' focus is innovation and the use of collaborative technologies to foster cultures of innovation that deliver tangible outcomes. Dr Tobias has spent his career in Cisco in building the healthcare vertical of Australia and New Zealand, resulting in Cisco being ranked by IDC as the #1 hardware supplier to the healthcare marketplace in Australia.

Jeffrey Tobias completed his University education at the University of New South Wales, gaining First Class Honours and a Ph.D in Computer Science. His first post was as a Research Scientist at the Atomic Energy Commission, Lucas Heights, where he became head of the Computer Research Group. During this time Dr Tobias carried out research into multiprocessing desktop computing, as well as designing a commercial-grade Pascal compiler for IBM mainframes (in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Tokyo and Cornell University and with Professor Niklaus Wirth of ETH, who created the Pascal language). This product was subsequently used in a large number of institutions internationally.

Dr Tobias then moved to join the Computer Science Department at the University of New South Wales, where he was Lecturer in Computer Science for a period of five years.

In 1983 Dr Tobias saw an opportunity to commercialise an Australian software product that had been invented to assist children with learning disabilities. This product quickly became widely used in homes and in schools across Australia, and formed the basis for a computer software distribution company. Over a fifteen-year period, this company grew to become a large extremely successful enterprise, with revenue of over eighty five million dollars per annum and over 120 employees.

Dr Tobias spent time in 2000 as a senior executive in a national eHealth organisation, responsible for managing the majority of the nation's eHealth financial traffic. In 2001 Dr Tobias moved to head up the Smart Internet Technology CRC, a joint venture between ten Australian Universities, Motorola, Telstra and several Australian IT organisations. After growing this organisation to over 120 researchers around the country, Dr Tobias left to take on a number of consulting roles, one of which was the design of a new National eHealth network for electronic health transactions. During this time Dr Tobias was invited to join the Broadband Advisory Group to provide high-level advice to Senator Richard Alston and the federal Government on Australia's broadband strategy.

Dr Tobias was the Managing Director of The Strategy Group, a corporate advisory firm focussed on over-the-horizons planning, grasping strategic opportunities, high-level business planning, and the integration of technologies such as broadband into business practices. The Strategy Group's vision is to uncover and develop strategic opportunities for their clients to enable them to move ahead of the competition and significantly enhance bottom line profit.

Dr Tobias is married with three children.
