The Bengaluru complex of defence public sector unit (PSU) Bharat Electronic (BEL) recently went live with SAP’s mySAP Business Suite. BEL which manufacturers a wide variety of defence equipments chose to deploy the SAP solution to integrate its disparate processes and streamline operations across its units and offices spread throughout the country.
Prior to going live, a pilot implementation was done in the Components Strategic Business Unit of BEL’s Bengaluru complex in October 2005. The other SBUs of Bengaluru complex went live in a phased manner during October and November 2006. The Bangalore Complex of defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) went live on SAP on December 29, 2006. With this rollout, the entire Bengaluru unit is now on SAP.
While the implementation was carried out by Wipro Infotech, the hardware and other equipments were provided by HP, HCL and BSNL.
This roll out marks the completion of the first phase of BEL’s SAP implementation plans. All the modules of SAP R/3 (Real Time 3-Tier Architecture) and Product Lifecycle Management have been implemented in this phase.
BEL is currently in the process of implementing a separate Hospital Management System for the Bangalore Complex’s Hospital. Also, on agenda is the implementation of R/3 and Product Lifecycle Management at other manufacturing units and BEL offices during 2007.
Once BEL is through with these, it plans to implement advanced modules of SAP including, Supply Chain Management (SCM), Business Information Warehouse (BIW), Strategic Enterprise Management (SEM) and other web based applications like Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Supplier Relationship Management (SRM).
Given the size and nature of BEL it was a mammoth task to go in for the SAP implementation and once completed, it’ll be one of the biggest of its kind in the country said BEL in a statement.
