C N Ram Quits As HDFC Bank CIO
By: Minu Sirsalewala  |  Mar 14,2008
C N Ram, one of India's most respected CIOs is on his way out of HDFC Bank. Ram is currently serving his last few months (Up to June 2008) as Head-IT, HDFC Bank. He will serve till end of March and then head for a long vacation from April to June end. Thanks to Ram, HDFC Bank is considered a leader in the use of technology in banking. About his next move, he said that he is heading home for some time to make way for the new generation, and has no concrete plans lined up yet.

According to Ram, he will evaluate his next role over a period of next three months. As he has been involved with IT for the last 25 years he is looking at new, challenging roles. The obvious choice that comes to mind is a CEO role or becoming an entrepreneur, but Ram would give out no clues. But given his vast, highly successful and respected career in IT there would obviously be no dearth of opportunities for him.

From his hometown Neyveli in Tamil Nadu, to IIT, then a management degree from IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA), and eventually to head the HDFC Bank IT team for over a decade, Ram has had a prolific career.

Despite his one-and-a-half-year experience at Tata Steel and an engineering degree, Ram chose to work with a bank after IIMA. He joined Bank of America (BOA) as an IT employee with a mission to automate all the four BOA branches in India.

He joined HDFC Bank as the Head-IT in 1994. He has been responsible for strategic IT planning, alignment of IT with business and new implementations that may assist the bank’s business in the future. One of the highlights of his tenure at HDFC Bank was his technology leadership during the HDFC Bank-Times Bank merger, which ensured merger was an extremely successful one with no inconvenience caused to customers.

He has been in the news recently as he was to steer the technology aspects of the recent HDFC Bank and CBOP merger.

Though I have interacted with him for a Few hours during my stint at HDFC Bank as a Vendor, the tech gyan which he gave us is still unforgettable. He is just not an ordinary person and I am sure HDFC Bank is going to miss him as a person and also as a Tech Guru. Wish you all the Very Best Mr. Ram

CN Ram is a Great leader. It's a big loss to Hdfc Bank which is tough to be back-filled - I Still remember him for the days that I spent in small space in Sandoz House when HDFC Bank had just started out, his passion for work and vision on technology automation and integration was amazing - a true innovator...It was pleasure working under his leadership - Best Wishes for is next venture - I feel he is one of the face who has made India name shine globally in Banking space... God Bless You sir !!

Mr Ram is a true strategist and a person with amazing leadership skills and strong vision. Seems like HDFC bank is actually going to have a tough time..

sad for the industry.
sumant @ Mar 18,2008
The unexpected quitting of HDFC by Mr. Ram is an unwelcome step for the entire Industry.Nobody is indispensable for the Industry but at the same time
Good Professionals are not available of the shelf
and are not a purchaseable commodity.HDFC will
have to go a long way to find a substitute for Mr.
Ram. Otherwise also the fair image of HDFC that
it was at one time is sliding down and the day is
not for when it will also join the ranks of Punjab &
Sindh Bank. The quality of service that once was
the Hallmark of HDFC at one point of time is going
to Dogs and consumers like me are totally disgruntled.
Sumant Kapoor @ Mar 18,2008
It is a great loss for HDFC Bank. I had the pleasure of
working with Ram for over 7 years (between April 1997 and June 2004). A thorough gentleman to work with. We achieved a lot during his able leadership.

congratulation & best wishesh for future projects.
vivek dharia @ Mar 17,2008
Thats really sad. Probably the biggest lost to HDFC Bank and its customers like me. Hope Aditya Puri and Deepak Parekh are understanding whats happening. They would never get any replacement of this calibre.

Customers to note this development.
