AMD Launches Quad FX Platform

Dailytech has reported that AMD has finally announced its much awaited 4x4 enthusiast platform — officially named Quad FX. The Quad FX platform features AMD's Dual Socket Direct Connect (DSDC) architecture, which has been designed to deliver 2 dual-core processors on a single board for Quad-core performance.

The Quad FX platform also marks the revival of the FX-series of processors with the launch of the new FX-70 series of processors. These new processors share AMD's socket F with Opteron processors and come equipped 2x1MB of L2 cache. The initial release of Quad FX systems, will be with dual-core processors namely the Athlon FX-74, FX-72 and FX-70. The FX-72 will be available at an initial cost of U.S. $599, while the FX-74 being the flagship will cost the same as an Intel Qx6700 i.e. $999. An interesting point to note is the fact that Quad FX systems will be compatible with AMD's native quad-core processors due in 2Q 2007.
