After much speculation over the weekend AMD today announced its decision to acquire ATI, one of the leaders in the graphical solutions market. The sum to be paid for the acquisition is $ 5.4 billion. With this AMD now will be adding computer graphics chips to its product lineup.
In the financial space ATI stockholders will receive $20.47, including $16.40 in cash and 0.2229 Advanced Micro shares, for each ATI share, the companies said today in a statement.
ATI is the largest manufacturer of graphical chips for notebooks and has a large market ranging from Dell to Lenovo and HP. With this acquisition, AMD will be able to make deeper inroads into the market traditionally dominated by Intel. Only earlier this year, AMD got its first orders from Dell, which has been a long time Intel partner.
By acquiring ATI, AMD is now in a better position to compete with Intel's products, whose products include chipsets with graphics capabilities, giving it a great platform to approach customers with.
