Almost a year after Intel beat them to it; AMD has finally begun to ship processors based on the 65nm manufacturing process. This brings their power rating down to 65W. The CPUs that have been given this upgrade are existing 90nm processors namely the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+, 4400+, 4800+, and 5000+.
Despite this move, AMD still has to move its notebook and server processors onto the new manufacturing process. This move is expected to be done by mid -07. This move to 65nm is significant as it means less power is needed to run the CPU. This allows the CPU to be clocked higher and still keeps the power requirement lower. Based on this philosophy and some clever re-engineering Intel has reclaimed the performance crown that AMD had worked so hard to get.
Intel has also recently indicated that it will start moving to 45nm next year which does not spell good news for AMD.
