Intel Ships Itanium 2 Processors

As expected, Intel yesterday rolled out the latest version of its Itanium processor for high-end computing while promising a big improvement in price-performance.

The Itanium 2 9000 series, formerly code-named Montecito, is Intel's first dual-core processors in its high-end server range. These processors will run at 1.4GHz to 1.6GHz with 6 Mbytes to 24Mbytes of onboard L3 cache. The new chips also include virtualization technology for the first time, as well as hyperthreading and cache safe technology that identifies and corrects cache errors.

Intel has launched five versions of the dual-core Itanium 2, including a 1.6GHz version with 24 MB of memory for $3,692; with 18 MB for $1,980; and with 8 MB for $1,552.A 1.42GHz version with 12 MB memory will cost $910 and a 1.4GHz version with 12 MB, $74.
