Many manufacturers have begun to reach the end of the 90nm fabricating era. The latest processor manufacturer who intends to move to 65nm process is Sun Microsystems. It has begun work on sequels to two new families of Sparc processors, "Niagara" and "Rock," that use the 65nm process.
The current Niagara systems, which began shipping in December, utilise a multitasking method that Sun calls chip multithreading. The first Niagara chip and its sequel unimaginatively called Niagara II are geared for lower-end servers that handle tasks such as website hosting while Rock will be for high-end tasks like Aviation Tracking. Niagara II is due in the second half of 2007, and Rock will be out in the first quarter of 2008.
The amusing fact in this new launch is that, Sun engineers are already working on sequels using the 45-nanometer process!
