Micro USB - New Standard in Mobile Connectivity
By: Shayne Rana   |   Sep 26, 2007
Finally some really good news on the mobile front. The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) has announced that the micro USB connector is now going to be used as a standard and common connector for mobile phones. Manufacturers like Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG, who are members of OMTP have all agreed that this is going to be the way to go with future phone models. It would seem like those days of having to find proprietary cables for your mobile in case of loss or mal – management (it could happen) are gone.

Markku Verkama, Director of Portfolio Planning at Nokia Technology Platforms explains, "The OMTP’s work to bring consensus for what is such a simple yet significant recommendation will have wide reaching benefit. With the reduction of cables needed for mobile data connectivity, we can further enhance user experiences in our devices while reducing the burden to the environment."

Tim Raby, Managing Director OMTP also said, "OMTP members are keen to pursue the single cable connectivity development due to its multiple benefits. We see these recommendations as a clear and demonstrable example of the work we are doing to make the mobile experience less confusing, less complicated and easier for consumers."

It’s about time lads. Good going. I’m sure there are millions out there like us here at Tech2, who’ll be thrilled with this information.
