Blu-Ray and HD-DVD Duke it Out in Europe
By: Gagan Gupta   |   Jul 17,2007
In yet another episode of format deathmatch, the Blu-Ray association strikes back at HD-DVD promotional group. A few days back the latter claimed that HD-DVDs share of the European market averaged 74% from January to May this year.

The Blu-Ray association was quick to bulls**t that claim stating that they didn't count the PS3 and PC Blu-Ray drive sales in their stats, both of which are capable of playing Blu-Ray movies. Needless to say HD-DVD supporters did reply to that —
Taking a swipe at the Blu-ray stats that are bolstered by the number of PS3's sold, Steve Nickerson, senior vice president, high definition media at Warner Bros sates:

"These figures are especially important because the standalone player market is by far the biggest driver of movie sales in the long-term."

"This is simply because those who buy a standalone player are interested solely in buying and watching movies and other video content, whereas those with HD drives built into games consoles are primarily interested in games."

I say there’s only one way to settle this—food fight!!! Read all about it at Pocket-lint.

this is 100% correct. to say that everyone who buys ps3's are buying them for movies is proposturest. i have a ps3 and have not bought a single blu ray.in fact the ps3 is such a piece of s*#! that it has been in my storage for months now. hd dvd has better picture quality and the sound is about the same and has more features which means people who love movies are going to get the whole package with hd dvd. lordof the ring trilogy, pans labrinth and matrix(for now) make hd dvd better in every way. oh yeah i forgot if you love sh#! flicks like resident evil the messengers and who can forget the complete waste of fu@*!#! time ultra violet then rush out and buy a blu ray

The PS3 is the cheapest Blu Ray player in the EU so it's obvious that some people are buying it primarily for Blu Ray usage. Its quite telling that the HD-DVD group never supply any real sales figures when making these claims. If HD-DVD is selling so well then why have Blockbuster in the UK decided to only stock HD-DVD in one out of every 10 stores?
