NEC Develops Dual-format DVD Chip
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Oct 11, 2006
It's been speculated about since the first-gen Blu-ray and HD-DVD products began to ship. A hybrid solution that would offer the best of both worlds. Well it's almost here.

Reuters has reported that NEC has developed and shipped a chip, which is compatible with both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. The chips will go on sale for about 10,000 yen (Rs 3,824) and will be roughly the same price as other NEC chips which can read either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Products that utilize this new chip will ship in 2007.

The only thing remaining now is a single lens solution that will read both these products. Even if one is to utilize the NEC solution, dual-players will have two utilize two separate lenses that will drive up the cost of these drives.
