Sony Ships Blu-Ray Drive

In a major move forward for Blu-Ray, Sony has officially announced its first Blu-ray Disc burner for PCs, which is slated to go on sale in the States in August for a rather expensive $750 USD. The drive utilizes Sony's own BD-R and BD-RE discs, and can store up to 50 GB of data which is equal to a rather substantial four hours of high-definition video at 1080i.

Sony says the BWU-100A running at 2x can record a single-layer 25 GB Blu-ray disc in 50 minutes. These are also multifunctional drives with support for both DVD and CD burning. The company has also bundled CyberLink's BD Solution with the drives which will enable customers to burn user created high-definition content from one of Sony's HDV camcorders onto a Blu-ray disc. The drive can now be pre-ordered at sonystyle.com.
