BPI Gets Permission To Sue AllofMP3 In UK
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   Jul 04, 2006
Music label trade association, British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has just obtained formal permission by the UK High Court, to sue Russian music download service AllofMP3.com.The UK based association wants the service to be declared illegal, and has managed to arrange for the court proceedings to be held in the UK.

BPI General Counsel Roz Groome says: “This is an important step forward in our battle against AllofMP3.com. We have maintained all along that this site is illegal and that the operator of the site is breaking UK law by making sound recordings available to UK based customers without the permission of the copyright owners. Now we will have the opportunity to demonstrate in the UK courts the illegality of this site."

Russian legal experts, on the other hand, say that Russia doesn't have any agreement with the UK for implementing British court decisions so unless the Russian state really wishes to implement the decision it would not hold in the country. The Russian site, which claims to be a legitimate download site with licenses from collection agencies, has been at the centre of legal controversy for some months while the music industry has argued, that neither artists nor labels receive any revenue for the downloads.
