The French have been pioneers in most forms of art, but is game development an art form too? Yes it is, according to Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, France's cultural minister, who awarded Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres which is bestowed upon those who make significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields. And by proving that game development is an art form, Vabres aims to get Game Developers the same tax breaks movie producers and artists enjoy in the European Union.
This insanely tactical move will also attract many game developers to France to enjoy the fertile environment it has to provide for artists to flourish; and here is what the tactical mastermind has to say:
"When we create games in a country—if it is China or France, we put our way of life into that game. Video game characters will not be required to wear a beret... but we do need to protect what is different in video games produced by each nation."
It's very encouraging for us gamers to witness how people are changing their perspective towards gaming as a whole; a while ago, it was seen as something for kids to do in their free time, and now it's being seen as an artistic medium through which people can express their view... this is truly inspiring!
