Intel Announces $2.5 Billion Project in China

US chip giant Intel Corp. Monday it announced to build a $2.5-billion semiconductor plant in Dalian, a port city in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The plant, to be located in a high-tech zone north of Dalian, will be one of Intel's eight factories worldwide to produce 12-inch (300-mm) integrated wafer after it becomes operational in the first half of 2010.

Construction of the plant will start before the end of this year, Intel said in a press release.

The new project will make Intel one of the largest foreign investors in China, with nearly four billion dollars of investment, said Paul Otellini, Intel's president and chief executive officer, at a press conference at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing.

Intel has invested $1.3 billion in the past two decades in assembly, test and research and development facilities in China, he said.
