NGO Greenpeace's April 2007 report of 'Guide to Greener Electronics', has recognized Lenovo for its environmental progress around the world. Greenpeace has ranked Lenovo as the top company out of a group of 14 leading technology companies for its green policies and practices. The Chinese manufacturer has jumped from last place to the middle of the pack to top dog in six months.
Other companies in the top five include Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Dell and Samsung, in that order.
Iza Kruszewska, International Toxics Campaigner, Greenpeace said, "Given the growing mountains of e-waste in China - both imported and domestically generated – it is heartening to see a Chinese company taking the lead, and assuming responsibility at least for its own branded waste. The challenge for the industry now is to see who will actually place greener products on the market."
Sony and LG Electronics have received penalty points for operating double standards on their e-waste take back policies across the world, while Apple, having made no progress since the launch of the Guide in August 2006, continues to rank last in the list. Greenpeace has also recognized Sony Ericsson's efforts to eliminate certain substances, blacklisted by European RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electronic products).
