Epson Develops World's Smallest GPS
By: Aalaap Ghag   |   Dec 19,2006

It's still not small enough to inject into the human body just yet, but Epson has reached close enough with their new S4E19863 GPS module. The 7mm x 6mm GPS module is only 1.28mm thick, and is supposedly the world's smallest GPS module yet. The module supports three 3GPP-compliant positioning methods, namely MS-Based, MS-Assisted and Autonomous.

Even after being so tiny, the module is expected to receive weak signals in all areas. We'd really like to try it out here in India, where the HP iPAQ took upto 10 minutes to get a signal.

The target applications are mainly new generation, small mobile phones with the module already being used in the NTT DoCoMo FOMA 903i series of handsets, but it is small enough for other applications as well, such as tracking tags in dog collars.
