Seagate in an effort to jazz up their image will launch a new series of portable HDDs that look good and can store up to a massive 750 GB of data. To be called FreeAgent these devices are aimed at users, who plan to carry all their files with them thereby allowing them to work under familiar conditions. The FreeAgent devices will not only contain a drive but will also have a software stack to manage and encrypt files.
These new devices will ship in three categories of products. First up is the FreeAgent range which is aimed at students and value conscious users. These products will range in sizes from 80 GB to 250 GB. The FreeAgent Pro line is aimed at the prosumer and will range in size from 320 GB to 750 GB. Along with integrated software tools for managing data, customers will also get 500 MB of space on a Seagate Internet storage site for posting photos or other files. The Internet service is free for six months. Prices range from $199 to $419.
Though I don't know how many people will be purchasing these products the concept is sound and most welcome.
