A 1.4 billion yuan ($170 million) project named "Chang'e" aims to launch an unmanned Chinese satellite on the moon by 2010. Huang Qiang, spokesperson of the commission, said the satellite project was approved by the Chinese central authorities in 2004 as part of the three-stage Program.
The first Chinese lunar satellite is set to play nightingale, by playing 30 songs for the Chinese people when it is launched next year. In an attempt to spread awareness about the space programme, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense has given the public a list of 150 songs to choose from, which will be transmitted via the lunar satellite. The commission's Lunar Probe Engineering Center said the public can vote for the songs picked out from the country's 56 ethnic groups, pop music from the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong and opera soundtracks, by October.
