In a communication breakthrough of sorts, UK airline BMI will reportedly be the first flyer to begin trials of satellite-based technology that will allow passengers to make in-flight mobile calls and send text messages on board. According to silicon.com, the service, expected to cost between $2.50 per minute, will be launched next year. The technology, developed by OnAir, will also be available for Air France and Portugal's TAP.
Tensing, the company which first gave us inflight email will provide the in flight equipment while Inmarsat will be incharge of satellite communications. OneAir will also launch Internet services for airline passengers in 2007. Although the service will be initially launched in Europe, plans for expanding to the Middle East and Asia are on the anvil.
