Cyber Crooks Are Now Robin Hoods by Default
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   Jul 09,2007
Web security firm, Symantec has reported a growing tendency among cyber criminals to test out their stolen credit card numbers by using them to donate money to charities. However, these fraudsters are not to be mistaken for the new age Robin Hoods, because their motives are not driven by kindness, but the fact that credit card companies and banks have gotten wiser.

A new breed of cyber crooks are trying to use charitable donations as a way to check whether their stolen credit card numbers are working or not. Symantec reports that criminals are now attempting to pay small amounts to various charities, to determine the value of the stolen card depending on the success or failure of the transaction.

The fact that banks monitor the services that flag inappropriate use of credit cards, donations made to charitable organizations are less likely to pick up on such transactions. Red Cross, a charitable organization confirms that this problem occurs very often. In fact, last month alone saw the refund of 700 fraudulent credit-card transactions at the Red Cross. Now, Red Cross automatically cancels any series of donation coming from a single email address, by using a variety of credit card numbers.
