French Anti-DRM Law Gutted
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   May 02, 2006
In what can only be called a rather disappointing development a French select committee has decided to gut a law which would have protected users from DRM and forced Apple to license its Fairplay technology and release the source code in the process. The law being looked at by the select committee would have forced technology companies to make their DRM schemes interoperable.

The dilution of the law has been criticized heavily by online journals, publications and by advocates of the fight against DRM. It seems that the wording of the law has been tinkered with so that interoperability would now be next to impossible to implement. The new law also now protects DRM publishers from the threat of having their source code printed online. Looks like Apple's considerable economic influence has assured that the French Government fall into line.
