Google will soon allow users to hear ethnic sounds, along with visuals on Google Earth, with the help of a Californian software company. The software can layer relevant recorded sounds over locations in Google Earth, enabling users to experience sounds belonging to the Brazilian rain, the Arctic ice sheets and other natural sounds. Google will officially launch the software for Google Earth on 29 May, at the Where 2.0 conference in San Jose, California.
Bernie Krause, whose California-based company Wild Sanctuary created the software said that their objective is to bring the world alive. Krause has spent 40 years collecting the sounds, and his company has accumulated over 3,500 hours of recordings, covering everything from the cracking of glaciers to midnight in the jungle. He told news magazine and website, New Scientist the company has sounds from all the continents of the world, including high mountains and low deserts. He also added that he hopes it will make virtual visitors more aware of the impact of human activity on the environment in the years since he began making and collecting the recordings.
The software will also enable users to hear various modern-day sounds at a particular location, then travel back in time to compare them with noises of decades gone by. Moreover, the sound files will be accompanied with time, date and weather information. Krause plans to have the software ready with 26 sounds for demonstration on May 29.
