A team of political scientists, hackers, and software engineers at the University of Toronto, have developed an advanced tool for Internet users, to bypass government scrutiny of the web. The tool called ‘Psiphon’ will allow citizens in restrictive countries, to gain access to Western news sites, blogs and other material, censored in countries like China. The free tool will be released for download, on Friday, 1st December, 2006.
Psiphon can be downloaded by a person in an uncensored country, which will turn that person's computer into an access point from which a person in a restricted country can access it on his own computer via an encrypted connection. The person can then view censored content using that connection as a proxy. The Toronto group, which refers to itself as ‘Hactivists,’ says there will be no evidence on the user's computer of having viewed censored material once they erase their Internet history after each use.
Although there will be no advertisements or publicity on the required login and password information, for obvious reasons, the program is designed to be shared within social circles of friends, family and co-workers.. The designers of the programs say that anyone with basic computer knowledge can use this program because Psiphon functions like any typical browser.
The software will also allow users to post on blogs and other Web sites like Wikipedia, which has a bone of contention in internet circles. The attempt to create such a tool came about after humanitarian groups protested over censorship of the internet in countries like China, without success.
