According to the Recording Industry Association of America, illegal online file sharing has been ‘contained', thanks to digital music stores like iTunes, Napster and Rhapsody which help combat piracy. The association says that illicit sharing of files has seen a flat growth since last year's Supreme Court ruling which held P2P services liable for actions of its consumers.
The shutting down of various P2P services like WinMX, Groxster and Bearshare along with others like Morpheus going legit, probably prompted the RIAA to make the statement. However, the fact remains that file sharing is extremely popular with over 10 million internet users swapping files online, which is actually more than last year's figure of 8.7 million.
The RIAA seems determined to fight piracy as it continues to sue thousands of individuals as well as satellite radio services like XM radio over licenses and other legalities.
