eBay has reportedly taken off a phony bid for Apple's much hyped iPhone from its site. At least 23 persons have been conned by an anonymous ebay seller, only known as rgonzales23455, who claimed to have six iPhone handsets in his possession.
The seller's note on ebay stated that he will accept Paypal only for this auction and ensured 'Free shipping' via USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation. He also promised to ship immediately after payment clears in five working days.
Even though Apple made it very clear that it will not be releasing the phone until sometime in June 2007, the highest bid for the iPhone on ebay reached $1,125 for a piece. The retail price for a 4 GB model is $499 and $599 for an 8GB model.
eBay, has now declared that it has pulled down the particular listing and has warned its users that any such listings claiming to be selling the Apple iPhone are in violation of eBay's pre-sale policy. An eBay spokeswoman said the buyer should file a claim with PayPal because it has a buyer protection plan. The buyer also plans to follow up with authorities if a real iPhone arrives.
