Search giant Google may soon face competition from a subsidiary of Xerox called Palo Alto Research Center Inc (PARC) and Powerset, the natural language search company, who are developing a new consumer search technology. The partnership between Powerset and PARC includes a technology licensing agreement, patent licenses and a long-term collaboration agreement.
The two companies are planning to develop a distinctly different technology for online search, based on natural language search. This new technology uses ordinary, familiar phrases and sentences, in place of the currently used 'computerese' language. The companies claim that this approach typically leads to more accurate and effective search results.
According to PARC, natural language processing enables machines to understand what people mean and respond with intelligence. People benefit from this work because it allows them to interact with a computer 'naturally', without having to adapt their behavior to a computer's limitations.
Some features of the language based technology include natural language question-answering systems, extraction of entities (people, places, dates, events, concepts) from unstructured text with identification of relationships among them, Text condensation for informative summarization and note-taking, and fact-matching within or across documents to detect repetition or contradiction. Also, the XLE parser, which runs on Solaris UNIX, Linux, and Mac OS X, consists of algorithms and interfaces for efficiently parsing, generating and writing.
Mark Bernstein,PARC President and Center Director said, "Today’s popular search engines are limited in terms of functionality and interaction with the user. Natural language represents the future of search, and the new paradigm in human-information interaction. The challenge to process and understand natural language has required many years to address, as technology has evolved to enable new capabilities. We're pleased to work closely with the exceptional team at Powerset to bring this capability to search. Powerset's leadership and engineering expertise are key assets in helping to deliver this technology to consumers."
Barney Pell, co-founder and CEO of Powerset, and company co-founder Lorenzo Thione said their collaboration with PARC results in remarkable new search capabilities that will turn the current statistical search model on its head.
