Two teenagers from New York have been arrested for trying to extort US$150,000 from popular social networking site, MySpace. The boys allegedly hacked into MySpace, stole personal information of members in the site and threatened to distribute their unbreakable code unless MySpace coughed up the ransom money. The Electronic Crimes Task Force nabbed the culprits, who were charged with illegal computer access and attempted extortion, and may face upto four years in prison.
This incident comes as huge blow to MySpace, which is already embroiled in controversy in the US. Last week, a bill was proposed to ban MySpace from schools and libraries as it allegedly misleads teenagers. This latest incident might just be another nail on its coffin.
