MySpace is in news again, for all the wrong reasons. Two teenagers have been sued by the assistant principal of their school for setting up a Web page on MySpace.com in her name and having posted obscene comments and pictures on it.
Anna Draker, the assistant principal at Clark High School, is claiming defamation, libel, negligence and negligent supervision on the part of the two 16 year old girls and their parents. Although MySpace.com removed the page when Draker complained about it, Draker is suing for an unspecified amount for damages for emotional distress, mental anguish, lost wages and court costs. Moreover, one of the students also is facing criminal felony charges.
The incident follows a string of similar cases wherein students of schools and colleges have started to use the internet as a means to vent their anger or frustration, making scapegoats out of professors in the process. The fact that social networking sites has provided the net savvy young generation with the power of posting anything at will on the free web, has triggered off a debate about censorship over the internet.
