US Prisoners Ask For Right to Use Internet

Prison inmates in US have demanded their right to use the Internet. The matter came to light when an inmate's package, containing printouts of legal research off the net, was confiscated by prison guards. The Georgia inmate, Danny Williams has challenged the 5-year-old regulation, according to which, inmates are barred from receiving any printed matter, downloaded from the Internet. Wlilliam's lawyer is now fighting the case on behalf of the inmates and their right to access to research and communication with the outside world, via the internet.

The case follows recent reports of several Texan death row inmates, who have their pages on popular social networking site, MySpace. The issue has triggered a national debate in the US, over freedom of speech and expression and how dangerous Internet exposure for prison inmates, can prove to be.
