The web's first, age- relevant search engine, cranky.com, has debuted to provide 50-plus internet surfers with search results according to their interests. The site is developed by Eons, a 50-plus media company founded by Jeff Taylor, who also created Monster.com.
The website features a simple user interface, which displays the top four sites matching the search term so users get a consistent, dependable set of four vetted results every time. Cranky.com also offers tips and insider secrets, to its senior surfers, on how to get the most out of these sites. Eons Answers is another feature that answers queries and directs the user to the most relevant content. Also, the 'Member Social Search' feature allows Eons members to rate and review sites. These member ratings, in turn influence the top sites that are delivered as results in future Cranky searches.
Rob Rubin, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Eons said, "Eons knows that the 50-plus market has a distinctly different set of needs and behaviors than the general population - specifically, they use search engines as navigational devices to find key sites on targeted topics such as health and travel. To make these searches better, Cranky is aimed specifically at the boomer generation, as opposed to a category. Think of it as personalized social search for a specific demographic — that spans the entire Web."
Taylor says he named the site 'Cranky' because he tends to get 'cranky' when lost in the search quagmire. He admitted that the name is tongue-in-cheek, but it has a good recall value to it. He also points out that the word 'rank' nestles in the middle of 'cranky'.
