.xxx Domain For Porn Sites Denied

The Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has once again rejected the proposal to provide a top level domain name of xxx to all porn sites on the Internet. The proposal was turned down due to a number of objections from the public and lack of support for the domain name.

The idea was first floated in 2001 by ICM Registry Inc., a representative of the porn industry. The ICANN had approved the proposal last year but had postponed the final decision.The 9-5 vote of the ICANN against the proposal has now finally settled the issue.

The ICM Registry said that the xxx domain names would help transparency in the porn industry, with rules to prevent spamming and other malicious content. Critics, however pointed out that the move would provide Internet users of all ages with an easily accessible channel for pornography, something like an online red light area.
