Microsoft, HCL to Launch World's Cheapest Laptop
By: IANS   |   Apr 12,2008

Microsoft Corp India and HCL Infosystems Ltd have announced a set of joint initiatives, including the launch of world's cheapest Windows enabled laptop computer and the setting up of a center of excellence (CoE) to create a customized solution framework for India.

Making the announcement in Mumbai on Friday, Ajai Chowdhry, chairman and CEO of HCL, said, "The laptop will be launched under HCL's MiLeap brand and will cost Rs 16,990."

Microsoft Corp COO Kevin Turner said that Microsoft and HCL have partnered to promote the use of IT in India for over two decades. According to him, the CoE will have over 500 software professionals who will create and deploy Microsoft technologies in various sectors, such as banking, telecom, defence, and railways.

Microsoft India chairman Ravi Venkatesan said the agreement between the two software groups entails the training and subsequent certifying of 50,000 students on Microsoft technologies in a span of three years.

"The batches will be trained in 100 'Career Development Centres' that will be set up by HCL. The curriculum used will be the Microsoft Official Curriculum," he said.

Venkatesan said this training will help the Indian IT industry retain its competitive edge, as well as supply the projected need of 2.3 million skilled computer workers that may arise due to the country's emergence as a preferred outsourcing destination.

Citing a Nasscom Strategic Review 2008 projection, Venkatesan said domestic IT services spending is estimated to grow at about 43 percent in 2008-09, with all signs of an increase in sophistication.

"The data indicates that CoE will become a big business enabler in the coming years," he added.

rameez @ Apr 17,2008

dipi @ Apr 16,2008
The word Cheapest is so cheap, why can't they use the word "economical". May be its HCL they are pathetic, this is my experience with their system.
Sasidharan D. @ Apr 16,2008
Can it run Linux?
cribcat @ Apr 16,2008
What is the configuration?!!!!!!!!!!!

Plz tell me the specs?
Praveen Cavale @ Apr 15,2008
When it will be launched
Heera @ Apr 14,2008
Think this article would have gained a lot of credibility if the titled had been:
Microsoft, HCL to Launch World's Cheapest WINDOWS ENABLED Laptop.
Then I would not even had clicked on it, knowing it is irrelevant in the cheap laptop connection - grin
T @ Apr 14,2008
A Low cost PC will have low configuration and low quality parts. Because HCL and Microsoft are business people, they will not provide anything in charity, expecially Microsoft
Niana @ Apr 14,2008
LOL....400$ laptop, I bet if you cut out microsoft it'd be about 150$, and it's probably a rebranded TI89 calculator....full of functionality! It...can....compute! Wireless? No. Actual processing? No.

I mean come on, seriously, it took a lot of effort to get OLPC's cheap and it took a lot of effort. Does microsoft realistically think they can send a giant press announcement with both

a: no product demonstrated
b: no product info
c: paying a shill to write an article
and d: a brand that people are boycotting?

Come on now.
matt @ Apr 14,2008
Rs 16,990 ? isn't that about $425 US? Not too impressive.
T @ Apr 14,2008
Sorry guys, you blew it. I can buy two OLPC units for that price, so this is not the cheapest laptop available.
Wayne @ Apr 14,2008
Just think, 2.3 million skilled workers bringing home those paychecks. That should almost make up for all the Rs they are shipping out to Microsoft in the United States.
Richard Chapman @ Apr 14,2008
This article is factually wrong.
.
There are already several laptops selling for less than this - including the OLPC and the EEE (among others).
.
Please correct.

Xy Zzy @ Apr 14,2008
Poor bastards. I really hope they see what Microsoft is up to and head him off before their entire infrastructure is completely roped in. India would be much better off supporting local development efforts by their excellent local programmers than they would paying Microsoft the billions that such "joint ventures" will really cost the Indian people in the long run.
Rajit @ Apr 14,2008
Wow - a low cost Windows PC means a PC running at the speed of a drip.

I would hope that the Indian population does not fall for this deception when there are lots of much better alternatives running Linux.
Frank Daley @ Apr 14,2008
Very interesting.
Yes I would love to have one. When it is going to be available.
Since I have a small bussoness i could not afford a laptop since it was out of my reach. Hope the price includes all taxes. I would like to know the specification including features, battery life, weight etc.
