Linux Inches Toward KDE/Gnome Compatibility
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Apr 06, 2006
While going through the normal tech roundups of the day, I came across an interesting article. It spoke of the Portland Project, an initiative focused on interoperability for X Window System desktops. The force behind this move is The Open Source Development Labs and freedesktop.org, an open-source project. They've announced the first beta of the first set of common interfaces (APIs) for the Gnome and KDE desktops, at LinuxWorld in Boston. KDE and Gnome both support the plans for these new APIs that will also give desktop PC vendors like Dell and HP, and enterprise application companies, such as SAP an incentive to support desktop Linux.

This is a great development as one of the things holding back Linux adoption at the grassroots level is the lack of a consistent common desktop.
