Apple has released a comprehensive series of updates for its OS X operating system, which brings with it significant updates and security fixes. There are over 45 fixes and changes, several of which deal with vulnerabilities in Apple's OSX and 3rd party components such as Adobe's Flash Player, the open source database MySQL and open source crypto tool OpenSSH.
One of the major fixes in this patch, concerns nearly eight vulnerabilities which are related to the way in the way Mac OS X handles disk images. Image files are compressed exact copies of disks and appear as a drive within the Macintosh Finder. If an unsuspecting user was to mount a compromised file, it could lead to their system either crashing or becoming vulnerable for remote access.
The various vulnerabilities that have been patched can be rated anything from moderate to extreme and pose varying risks. While some can be utilized for completely compromising a machine remotely, others are minor and can only be used if someone has access to a machine physically. With this security rollout, OSX moves onto version no 10.4.9. This is likely to be the last security update before latest version of Apple's newest OS, Leopard that (10.5.0) ships later this year.
