Behold! The 1 GB SIM card from Samsung!
By: Aalaap Ghag   |   Nov 08, 2006

Samsung has just announced a huge, 1 GB S-SIM card that is slated to change the mobile phone market. Today’s high-end mobile phones carry two cards—a memory card and the standard SIM card—but now, the extra capacity on the new S-SIM card will replace the need for an extra memory-only card.

Photos, videos, music and other files can now be stored on the SIM card itself. This will remove the need to change a memory card when you switch to a different phone, which is a problem right now with the various memory card formats being adopted by different companies, such as MicroSD/TransFlash, Memory Stick Micro, MiniSD, MMC Micro, etc.

The new 1 GB S-SIM card utilizes System-in-Package (SiP) technology that enables it to carry the high-capacity NAND flash memory module without increasing the size of the standard SIM card. It supports the standard SIM interface, which makes it compatible with existing systems and also supports high-speed MMC and USB interfaces.

Hey This is a Great News.
I would like to know some more info like, will this be compatable with all the latest phones and what about the serrvice providers "GSM & CDMA". If i ever get a chance to use this S-SIM card, then do I need to send this S-SIM card to the service provider for loading service based SIM details into it.

this is a real boon to the multimedia users who want there movies n music on the go, i'm just waitin' to see if they hit the right price tag. if they do then i would be frist in line to buy S-SIM card. Only one question now remains unanswered what to do with my sd-slot!!

Finally, its here. It had been in the works for quite sometime now. But the key to the gb sim card success would be pricing, which isn't really difficult, considering the record-breaking number of mobile users in india and china.

rahul nagpur @ Nov 11, 2006
Good concept! But i am afraid any mobile set in india can utilize this type of memory. There might some compatibility issues. Second issue might be of data transfer speeds(read/write).
