3G phones banned in Cambodia
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   May 29,2006
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has banned third generation mobile phones (3G) in the country, in an attempt to curb pornography. He claims that these phones make it easier to spread obscene images and videos through its technology. According to the Cambodia Daily, 3G phones have accused the phones of "destroying Khmer culture and polluting the minds of teenagers". The petition for its ban came from the First Lady of Cambodia, Bun Ray along with wives of several other senior government officials. The ban comes soon after Alcatel announced that it will provide 3G services to Cambodian mobile phone network CamGSM. The ban on 3G technology means Cambodia will be deprived of mobile phones with high speed internet access, more space for digital information, high quality video and music services. Cambodia may have to pay the price for being conservative by losing out on one of the most advanced technologies.

a sizable chunk of their population still live in extreme poverty. while I believe that bringing new technology to developing nations can have drastic effects on improving literacy, access to health warnings, general spread of information, there are more pressing concerns at the moment than whether or not the few wealthy enough to own cellphones can enjoy 3G wireless on them. Basic internet access in the provinces, for starters... most of the population live in rural conditions not seen in most other countries for hundreds of years.
