China Wants USB Charging In All Phones
By: Aalaap Ghag   |   Dec 26,2006

I wonder why it took anyone so long to realize, but at the same time, I’m happy that a body of such large proportions as the government of China has finally put a foot down to make it compulsory for all mobile handsets to have a standard USB charger.

All of us (who don’t have a Nokia phone) have had problems finding a charger away from home, and also at home where each member of the family has a different brand phone. This is aggravated when phones are changed quite frequently, as a new place will need to be created just to hold all the family chargers. Most Motorola phones now have a standard mini-USB slot from where they can charge, and so do most Windows Mobile Smartphones.

On a more serious note, this surplus of incompatible chargers is beginning to create a lot of waste that can be completely done away with, when all chargers go standard and are compatible with each other.

This move by the Ministry of Information Industry has been in the right direction and I hope other governments also realize that the benefits are for everyone. Considering the fact that most phones are manufactured in China, I can imagine this happening sooner. I’m really through with having three different chargers for each of my phones, even though they are all from Samsung!

To think no one thought about this in the age of iPod is plain ignorant! The company perspective is: USB chargers would act as a substitute to the conventional chargers. Not one mobile manufacturer would wanna do that. Simple economics! It is actually that simple.

However, thanks to the governmental regulations, consumers end up getting the best of everything.

Its not that it took anyone so long to realize. Its just that people either don't communicate this to the concerned as strongly as they should and more important there is no mechanism set up by the manufacturers to capture such thoughts which practically every one has. People express these things in their house, with their peers and at the workplace. I have a suggestion, why doesn't CNN IBN take this up as an important issue and push it across to the industry? To test this just put this on the homepage and ask people to vote. I am sure the results can only help make this wish stronger.

This is a good thing and rumour has it Korea and others will soon follow.

You wonder why no one started off with this step? Because as a result of this USB charging option, companies wouldn't now be able to sell their "unique" chargers that they sell with mobile phones. Something that you would definitely have bought from those companies, has now found a substitute.

Nokia is the only one which would take the least hit, because of its standardized chargers.

that is an excellent idea..not only china; it should be followed globally; or the charger should be universal

This sounds like a very kool idea, particularly when we travel and we have different makes of phones you can imagine the trouble. Hope TRAI or GOI will take note of this
