Developers Gather at MOTODEV Summit in Bangalore
By: Laiq Qureshi   |   May 16,2008

Motorola has taken a step ahead in mobile ecosystems development with MOTODEV, a congregation of mobile application developers. The event, which took place yesterday in Bangalore, was aimed at identifying developers and trends in the mobile application space. Various training sessions were arranged at the summit to deliver comprehensive technical content.

Motorola, always deemed a major competitor to Nokia, will concentrate heavily in personally engaging developers in its platform opportunities. "By providing the local development community with tools, guidance, and direct access to Motorola technical experts, we aim to inspire and support a new wave of innovative and customized multimedia, music and location-based services applications for Motorola users in India and around the globe," said Malcolm Dawe, Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Devices, Motorola India.

What's fascinating was the company's bullishness with regard to the open-source platform, and what makes it even more interesting, for the market, is the developers' keen eye on the same. Phones like the MOTOMING featured a Linux-based UI. According to the company spokespersons, Social Media and Multimedia are clear winners as far as attention grabbing and useful applications are concerned. The underlying message was to provide developers with more choice in selecting the environment that best fits their application needs.

"What we don't do with developers is fence them in. The idea is to identify innovative ideas, and aid in developing them the right way, so as to leverage on our existing platforms," said Christy Wyatt, Vice President, Software Platforms and Ecosystem, Motorola. This, however, doesn't mean financial backing.

Motorola has certainly caught on as far as the social networking phenomenon goes, and now it wants to leverage that to develop applications that will give users just that. The company also seems keen on implementing radical ideas.

"We are interested in redefining technologies. For instance, P2P can be taken to a different level, where instead of saving data on servers, users can save it on the phone and pull content directly off the phone," said Paul D Leeper, Director, Business & Marketing Development.

"Currently, music and video are two very integral part of our time and effort in terms of research and development. There's already a lot happening... for instance, streaming music on your phone is now a reality. That apart, we are considering building artist relations regarding specialized preloaded mobile content," said John M Hallman, Market Development, Video and Mobile TV.

Other ideas include Cellular Network Extension via Local Connectivity i.e. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc. and Home Networking via Wireless Technology. What Motorola is aiming at with the whole program is to engage developers in making something really worthwhile, both for themselves as well as for Motorola customers.
