Google, Orange in Talks to Develop GPhone?

Close on the heels of Apple's iPhone, we get news of Google's GPhone.

According to unconfirmed sources, the software giant is in talks with global mobile network provider, Orange, to develop a web-enabled, co-branded mobile phone device. If true, this will be Google's first venture into hardware.

The phone will come pre-loaded with mobile versions of Google apps like Google Earth and Gmail. It is rumored to feature location-based searches, such as a tailored list of local cinemas, restaurants and other amenities, and maps and images from Google Earth.

The device, said to be manufactured by Taiwanese firm HTC, might even have a display screen similar to a video iPod. Reports say the Google's phone device will go on sale in or after 2008.

Though this is a rumour, one cannot totally discount it because it fits in Google’s mission statement and also it would enable Google in conquering the advertisement market.
