The world's highest peak now receives mobile phone coverage due to a phone mast installed by China Telecom at the base camp in Rongbuk. However, Baber had to carry the phone's battery beneath his clothes to keep it warm enough to function in the -30º temperatures. The phone call was made to a special voicemail account and his text was sent to John Barlow of Motorola Inc.
Baber said, "Everest symbolizes the greatest challenge to any climber. To reach the summit and achieve world records with Motorola is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. During the call, Rod described the view, his feelings and what he would do once he was back down at base camp. His second call was to his wife and two children.
