MTNL Unveils Lost Mobile Tracking System
By: PTI   |   Apr 16, 2008
In order to help its customers track their phones when stolen or lost, telecom service provider MTNL on Tuesday unveiled the Lost Mobile Tracking System, a software which they can download and install for free.

"The software can be downloaded for free from MTNL through GPRS and can be installed on almost 250 models of mobile phones," a spokesperson for Micro Technologies, the Mumbai-based firm which developed the software said.

The software after installation, stores the IMEI number of the phone, a unique number that identifies each mobile phone, as well as the SIM (subscriber identity module) card number being used by the customer, he said.

The software then asks the user to provide an alternate phone number and email address which is stored.

If the phone is stolen and a new SIM card is being used, the software immediately sends an email and SMS alerting the customer that the phone has been stolen and where it is presently, the spokesperson said.

It also informs the original customer of the phone number of the new user, he said. MTNL will be providing the service to its users at a cost of Rs 30 a month.

"We will be providing upgrades to the software which will allow users to delete the contents of their inbox from the stolen phone," P Sekhar, MD of Micro Technologies said.

MTNL will be introducing other value added services in the near future including streaming video content on phones, Executive Director of MTNL J Gopal said.

"We expect to provide the service in the next month. The required software will be provided by us and will allow users to watch live video on their phones," Gopal added.
