Telecom New Zealand announced that it will provide New Zealanders with the first global roaming solution with the launch of a WorldMode CDMA/GSM mobile phone.
In a deal with international mobile phone manufacturer Samsung, Telecom will offer customers a phone with the ability to use CDMA domestically but roam on either CDMA or GSM networks when travelling overseas.
While in New Zealand the mobile will operate solely on Telecom’s CDMA network and when abroad the phone will switch to GSM reception in markets where CDMA is not available. The mobile phone will potentially give New Zealanders the ability to seamlessly communicate across over 300 networks worldwide.
"A WorldMode CDMA/GSM mobile phone really does offer the best of both worlds. It allows Telecom customers to enjoy the superb performance of CDMA in New Zealand and other countries with CDMA networks, while also being connected in countries using GSM networks", Kevin Bowler, general manager, Telecom said. "The global phone is one of a number of CDMA initiatives that we have planned over the coming months."
"Before Christmas we will be commencing the launch of our Rev A upgrade to our mobile broadband network providing a significant increase in upload and download speeds", said Bowler.
Telecom is targeting early 2007 for release of phase one of the WorldMode phone following testing that is underway currently. This will be the first of a range of WorldMode phones to be progressively released over the course of 2007.
