Amid protests from animal-rights activists, assistant professor of arts, Beatriz da Costa, assistant professor of arts, computation and engineering at the University of California, went ahead with her unusual art project aimed at getting people thinking about the hazards of smog.
A flock of pigeons with tiny backpacks equipped with miniature smog sensors and mobile phones, strapped to their backs, were released to roam the Northern California skies and transmit air pollution data to a "pigeon blog" website.
The first flock took off on Wednesday for a 30-minute mission over the Silicon Valley. A second flight is scheduled for Saturday.
The art project is part of ZeroOne San Jose, a weeklong showcase of technology and art, which includes a robotic willow tree, a karaoke ice cream truck and a laughing bicycle.
Professor Da Costa's project was inspired by a century-old photo of a homing pigeon wearing a tiny spy camera.
