Virgin Games has tied up with Game Domain International (GDI) to announce a game download service called A World of My Own (AWOMO), due to release later this year.
Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group says this venture is very exciting for Virgin, as it gives them the opportunity to do for PC games, what iTunes did for online music. He adds that the GDI technology will revolutionize how the mass market will play games, and will give them more choice for less money.
The new platform from Virgin, promises to offer many key advantages over existing technologies, such as rapid download speeds, better security, and improved ease of use for the customer. Chris Gorman OBE, director of GDI, revealed that the new platform will also host mega cash prize gaming tournaments for its users.
A number of the world's major games publishers have already registered their support for the platform. Europe's largest PC games distributor, based Koch Media has already expressed interest in the new technology. Also, major gGaming brands such as EA, Ubisoft and Deep Silver, are believed to have reacted enthusiastically to the new platform.
