Hard disks in televisions; what could be better innovation? Definitely better than sliced bread I’d say...
The Japanese giant Hitachi has revealed that it is launching a new generation of flatscreen TVs with full HD resolutions and built in hard disk drive recorders.
Two of the X Series models - the 50in 50XR01 and 60in 60XR01 - will use plasma technology, while a 37-inch LCD model will be available for those who prefer something a little more diminutive. The X Series sets will all carry a 250GB HDD for storing recordings, and sport twin digital tuners so you can watch one digital channel while recording another. Naturally the HDD also lets you access live pause and chase playback features. The LCD model also carries both Hitachi’s acclaimed IPS Alpha panel technology, and 100Hz processing to improve the appearance of motion.
A new processing system appearing across this Series, is ‘Movie FRC’ – a proprietary frame rate conversion technology. Most televisions use a simple repeat frame process to convert film footage, traditionally shot in 24 frames/sec, into a format suitable for home viewing, which can create image judder during horizontal ‘panning’. But Movie FRC works out the missing frames, plugging the gaps with intermediate images to produce smoother movements and scene transitions. The P50XRO1 and P60XRO1 also have the ability to accept the 1080p 24 format available from some Blu-ray and HD DVD players.
The latest incarnation of Picture Master HD, meanwhile, incorporates 16 bit color recognition engine and uses 3D color management to create truer-to-life skin-tones, fabrics and textures. Plus there’s a twin dynamic enhancer to enable superior reproduction of shiny and glossy items - traditionally one of the hardest surface looks to reproduce, even in HD. And finally the whole image should appear cleaner and fresher, thanks to additional Digital Noise Reduction which filters out background fuzz.
Finally we get to the X Series connectivity, which finds all models featuring an integrated SD card slot, USB connection and three HDMI ports.
