Spam On The Rise Again
By: Tech2.com News Staff   |   Dec 03, 2008
When San Jose, Calif.-based hosting company McColo Corp., was shut down on November 11, spammers who were knocked offline are now, according to security researchers, finally coming back online.

Spam volumes dropped about 80 percent when McColo was shut down and has now risen to about 37 percent of what they were before McColo was brought down.

McColo was hosting command and control servers that were being used to send spam or Trojans to bot software planted on PCs, mostly in the U.S.

Some of the bots are programmed to connect to a new domain after a certain amount of time of inactivity. Some are connecting to ISPs outside the U.S., which will make it difficult to shut them down again.
