Research In Motion (RIM) launched its latest smartphone — the BlackBerry Curve — in India today at Taj President hotel, Cuffe Parade. As of now the phone can be acquired only through Hutch and Airtel and is scheduled to be available by late June. “We will be looking forward to enhancing the list of carriers. As of now this it though,” said Krishnadeep Baruah, Carrier sales manager for India.
Termed as the smallest and lightest phone with full QWERTY keypad, the phone measures just 107mm x 60mm x 15.5mm and weighs 111g. “The Blackberry Curve combines consumer-friendly multimedia capabilities with the industry’s leading email and messaging experience in an elegant new smartphone design,” said Norm Lo, Vice President of Asia Pacific, RIM.
The Curve comes with a 2MP camera, with 5x digital zoom and built-in flash. With the incorporation of a 3.5mm jack, the Curve is seen to be taking Multimedia features of a phone very seriously. “We want to make the multimedia experience for users a rich one. And the first step towards ensuring that is making the jack universal. So no hang-ups about using only proprietary earphones,” says Baruah.
The phone supports an extendable microSD card that can be upped to accommodate up to 4GB. Other features include Speaker Independent Voice Recognition (SIVR) for Voice Activated Dialing (VAD) and Bluetooth 2.0 support for wireless headsets.
The Curve features a new integrated spell checker with a user-customizable dictionary. It is also supported on Blackberry Internet Service, giving users access to up to 10 work or personal email accounts as well as Blackberry Enterprise Server, enabling advanced security and IT administration within IBM, Lotus, Domino, Microsoft Exchange and Novell Groupwise environments.
