Samsung, Indicom Team Up For The Duo
By: Shayne Rana   |   Aug 02, 2007
Samsung is yet again in the news; the only difference is, this time we know their newest mobile is on our shores. The Samsung Duo is a world mobile in a very literal sense. The reason for its name is due to the fact that it supports both GSM and CDMA technology. Yup! That’s right. You can have two Sim cards in the Duo and you have options for 2 GSM cards or 2 CDMA cards or even one of each.

The phone is available off the rack and mainly through TATA Indicom who is the service provider partnering with Samsung for CDMA. Although it may look like a regular Samsung slider, it’s not a slider at all. I fact it’s a touch screen Smart phone with a 2.2-inch hybrid TFT display. It’s also equipped with a 1.3 megapixel camera with 10X digital zoom and video recording.

It’s also a business phone that supports document files in excel, word and PDF formats in read only though. For messaging, it has 3 options viz an ‘ABCD’ keyboard or a normal mobile phone keypad and of course since it uses handwriting recognition software, you can just scribble it in. The phone also supports Bluetooth with A2DP compatibility. The Duo has 10MB of internal memory and can support a 1GB external memory, microSD card. It doesn’t support WAP when using a GSM provider.

The Samsung Duo also has an MP3/AAC+ player and supports video in MPEG4. There’s no radio unfortunately. This phone is directed at the religious Indian as well. Why? Because it has an inbuilt Indian calendar which lists all the festivals, dates and important occasions. It also has a Panchang feature for auspicious/inauspicious times during a day. You can also set a daily Aarti that’s also embedded into the phone’s technology that’s correlated with the day of the specific Indian deity.

The Samsung Duo is out and was launched in Mumbai today. It’s available at a price of Rs. 11,999 not including the Indicom Sim. TATA Indicom is also offering special plans with customers who decide to switch services.

No radio means boring life one of the very bad feature.Another is dual sim but dosent works simultaneously.Mega pixels should be more .Prices are very high in this competative market.Srceen size should have been big .No wap in the G S M mode in the current time is yet another very big disadvantage

Price of the product should cut down and FM feature should be added. There is a price varience between Tata Indicom shops and True Value Hubs.. Someone offering @11,999 and some are 9000/-

No It can not be used with Reliance Network, and only one network can be used at ones, one can use both gsm or both cdma, but should switch between each networks, price is high and features are not so goog, At last Phone was not preferable, no use of dual sims, should be renamed.

I am looking for a mobile phone like that. That can hold two sim cards and work simultaneously with both of them. TATA and Samsung done a great job. I want one in my country. There is a great market in europe for mobile phones like that.

It is nice to find a product which works both cdma and gsm. However it is not very clear whether one can use both sims at the same time and do have conference.

Also it will be nice to have a low end product for Rs 5K so that many would buy including me other family members 6.

Seems amazing. The concept of having two cards in one phone can be the start of bigger things.

Adding radio can make a difference to number of youngsters buying it.
Niranjan.M @ Aug 04, 2007
camera's megapixel should be 3.5 or above
RajinderJaura @ Aug 04, 2007
in dual sim mean can we use 2 active connection at once?
balaji @ Aug 03, 2007
FM radio must have been there
sulu @ Aug 03, 2007
As I read from the news, it is not clear whether I can use 2 SIMS simultaneously, ie, two different antenas for 2SIM cards. Al;so it is not clear whether I can switch between the lines or have conference.

It will be nice to have CDMA + GSM available in phone and can be offered at the low end say for Rs 5K so that many would switch over immediately and I am one.
