Hewlett-Packard has announced that it will be the first major server manufacturer that will offer support for a non-commercial community-based OS. The company has made a general announcement that it plans to begin supporting the Debian Linux distribution for customers around the world by the end of this financial year.
It will support Debian for the HP BladeSystem and ProLiant computer servers. The company has also mentioned that it will provide support directly to consumers rather than working through a third party service. This announcement was made during the recent Linuxworld conference. HP also announced that the industry's first Debian Linux customizable thin client will serve the requirements for both mainstream users and specialized industries. The company also indicated that it plans to improve the serviceability for Linux customers by means of remote monitoring and diagnosis shipped with each of its servers that have Linux.
I am guessing that HP has taken this step to escape the subscription-based hell that Redhat and others have become.
